Strategy playbook
Battle-tested defensive and offensive playbooks for income traders. Read once, internalize, then reference under fire.
Only sell puts on stocks you would be happy to own at the strike.
Every cash-secured put is a contingent buy order at the strike price. If you would not buy 100 shares at that price, do not sell the put.
Price is dropping and the stock is trading below your short put strike on expiration Friday (assignment risk)
- 1.Buy to close your current put before the market closes Friday
- 2.Sell to open a new put at a lower strike for the following week
- 3.Only do this if the new put earns you a higher or equal net credit
You avoid being assigned shares at a price above the current market value. The lower strike gives you a better entry point if you do get assigned later.
You sold a $50 put. Stock drops to $48 on Friday. Buy back the $50 put for $2.20, sell a $47 put next week for $2.50. Net credit of $0.30, and your worst-case entry is now $47 instead of $50.
